Welcome to “Flashback Friday,” folks. All is good. I woke up this morning to a downpour of rain, but the sun is up and shining as I sit here on the verandah preparing this week’s R&B, Soul, Funk and New Jack Swing tunes. Tunes that will free your mind, touch your body and free your soul.
This week is focusing on the late 1980s and early 90s. I have some great tunes lined up, so let us get it rolling with our first selection.
I bet most of you think the name of the all-female band, TLC stood for Tender Loving Care (TLC). It is the first initials of the original group members and was coined by Perri “Pebbles,” Reid who was the group’s first producer.
The original members were Crystal Jones, Tionne Watkins, and Lisa “Left Eye,” Lopes.
It is interesting that the first member to leave the group was one of the individuals that thought of creating an all-female group in the image of the male New Jack Swing group Bell, Bev, Devoe. It was Crystal Jones’ idea to create the group, but due to contractural disconnect, she left the group.
After signing with Pebbles as their manager, the group needed that third member and it was Pebbles who found Rozonda Thomas.
The problem now was that the first initials no longer matched the acronym for the group’s name. Enter the nicknames, Tionne “T-Boz,” Watkins, Lisa “Left-eye,” Lopes and Roxonda “Chilli,” Thomas, TLC.
Here is TLC with one of their Number One hits “No Scrubs.”
