If we can get past the abuse (mental and physical)Ike Turner inflicted on his musical partner and wife Tina Turner, we would see that he was a really talented musician.
Ike and Tina Turner were pioneers of the Soul Genre. Ike Turner started out with his band The Kings Of Rhythm. They specialized in performing the Blues and perform they did. They became one of the most sought-after bands on the club scene around St. Louis.
Anna Mae Bullock was still in high school when she moved to St. Louis and use to party at the Black clubs around St. Louis and that is where she saw the Kings of Rhythm.
After a while, she got to meet the band members and tried unsuccessfully to get a chance to sing. She started to date one of the band members and had her first child with him. So how did she get a chance to sing? Her sister also dated the group’s drummer who one night handed her the mike and the rest, of course, is history.
At some time in her relationship with the band, she moved in with Ike who would teach her how to perform and vocal control. His first name for her was Little Ann.
Let us listen to one of Ike and Tina Turner’s biggest hits “River Deep Mountain High.”
