Tonight – Kool & The Gang

What does my next band have in common with Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor? Well, it is not comedy. As Kool & The Gang began to solidify their sound on the East coast, the toured with the two-star comedians and also Ritchie Havens.
Robert “Kool,” Bell and his brother Ronald started joined a neighbourhood group that included several friends. At first, the group was known as the Jazziacs, but over time they had several names, The New Dimensions. The Soul Town Band, Kool & The Flames and finally the name we have come to know and love, Kool & The Gang.
Over time the group has earned the respect of such artists as James Brown, Van Halen, Nina Simone and many others.
Speaking of James Brown they are the most sampled sound in Hip Hop next to the Godfather and the Number One sampled band.
When Kool & The Gang started their sound was a mixture of Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Funk. That has not changed, but in 1979, they would offer fans a smoother sound with the release of the “Ladies Night,” album.
Here is Kool & The Gang with “Tonight.”
